Description

Manjushri is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, revered as the Bodhisattva of Great Wisdom and deep insight. His name, meaning “noble and gentle one” or “gentle glory,” reflects his role in revealing the true nature of all things. Known across Chinese, Tibetan, and Esoteric Buddhist traditions, Manjushri is often honored as the “Meditational Deity,” with his images placed in meditation halls, libraries, and study rooms to inspire learning and clarity.

He is usually shown as a youthful male Bodhisattva, holding a flaming Vajra Sword of Discriminating Light in his right hand. This sword symbolizes the sharp power of wisdom to cut through ignorance, illusions, and confusion, bringing transformation and clarity. In his left hand, he carries a blue lotus flower that holds the Prajnaparamita Sutra— the Great Wisdom teaching of the Buddha—representing purity and the essence of profound understanding. According to legend in Nepal, Manjushri drained an ancient lake from the Kathmandu Valley, making the land habitable, further highlighting his importance in both spiritual and cultural history.
